Your Questions Answered – Navigator Discipleship

Fran Johnson from our Melbourne Labouring Community answers some of your questions about Navigator discipleship.

Why have you enjoyed Navigator discipleship, in group and individual settings?

Navigator one-to-one discipleship began my spiritual transformation. I was quite broken spiritually when Linda came alongside me and encouraged me to deepen in my personal walk with the Lord. In my broken state I was attending church regularly and singing in the choir but I had no idea how to walk with God on a daily basis. Linda helped me develop habits that have lasted a lifetime. She took me to the Scriptures and showed me how to have a meaningful time of meeting with God each day. She encouraged me to memorise and meditate on Scripture and showed me how. She prayed with me and helped me with methods to persevere in prayer for people. Above all she loved me deeply.

How has it helped you grow?

These skills learned from my time with Linda have allowed me to feed myself spiritually over the years. My relationship with Jesus is real and abiding. As I actively apply the Scriptures to my life, I have seen the Holy Spirit bring incremental changes in my attitudes, character and sense of wellbeing.

What resources are available to me to help me grow, or to help others grow?

Many people think they could never disciple anyone; that this is the role of leaders. Not so! With a bit of instruction and a few tools, ordinary believers in Jesus can have a huge impact on the lives of others. A helpful book to assist people in this is: Down to Earth Discipling by Scott Morton. His down to earth approach has helped me gain the confidence in coming alongside other women.

Another resource that has been very helpful is: The Gospel for Real Life by Jerry Bridges. Jerry, in this book, brings great clarity to the essence of the gospel and the need we have to daily review the gospel ourselves thus fixing our eyes on Christ and the power and forgiveness the gospel promises.
