Your Questions Answered: How do you grow in joy and faith?

Q: How do you grow in joy and faith?

The Bible tells us to rejoice in the Lord always but what does that look like in day-to-day life?

In my experience, joy is rooted in trust. It is a byproduct of what Christ has done for me and my life commitment to Him. It has two sides to it.

On the one hand, I trust in God, I trust in His Word. I also trust in the body of Christ for mutual encouragement, discipleship and accountability. We all can grow and rejoice together.

I trust God to transform me into the person He created me to be and to fulfill the good work He has prepared for me (Eph 2:10). I trust His Word. I live out my trust by daily depending on God. I look for Him to work, delighting in all that He is to me and is doing in the world, finding joy partnering with Him.

On the other hand, I entrust myself to God. I lean into Him when I am unsure, afraid, hurting, or worried for myself or others. He provides His wisdom, protection and daily grace. Sometimes I can’t see His hand moving until after the fact when I look back. Then my joy is fed by gratefulness for His constant faithfulness. Psalm 30:5 says, ‘Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.’

‘Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.’
1 Peter 1:8-9

Trusting in and entrusting my life to God feeds my joy as His will is done, as I praise His faithfulness, and as the good work He’s planned to do (in and through me by His Word, His presence, and His church) is accomplished.
