Discovering Your Design

By Ian McIntosh, Staff Care.

Know Yourself. Made in the image of God. Genesis 1:27

The need to answer the question: “Who am I, and why am I here?” has always been at the core of our very being. God made us this way for His Purposes.

“Men go abroad to wonder at the height of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars; and they pass by themselves without wondering.”  – Augustine

Fifteen students and workers met for the day-and-a-half workshop, Discovering Your Design, where each person took time out to get greater clarity on these huge questions.

Here is one participant’s reflection:

I thoroughly enjoyed the process of participating in the “Discovering your Design” workshop. Working through Spiritual Gifts, Personality Type, and Personal Values gave me an insightful understanding of myself which helped me see how I fitted into God’s calling. Developing a Mission Statement that pulled these together was extremely meaningful to me, and very helpful as I move forward in ministry.

I passionately delve into God’s Word, emerging to connect meaningfully with people and draw them to Jesus. I enjoy discipling others through the Scriptures so they in turn can do that with others for generations to come.

In the workshop I use the illustration of God’s church here on earth being like a giant jigsaw puzzle. Like any jigsaw puzzle, the picture is not complete until the last piece is put in place, then the picture makes total sense. So it is with us as the body of Christ. As we put the last piece in place, it has our face on it and we can see how vital our part is in completing the picture. If my piece is missing, the whole picture is incomplete. That’s why it’s so important to know “who I am and why I am here.” I can then be fulfilled in knowing my fit in God’s Kingdom, and the contribution He would have me make (1 Corinthians 12).

“If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted…the Lord will guide you continually…” Isaiah 58:10-12
